Well friends, this one came down to the wire. And for a while there... I wasn't sure I was going to make it! As I mentioned in my WIP post, this is one of my oldest WIPs in the quilting category. And when I picked it up again I was feeling very "blegh" about it. Not really loving it... super frustrated... Just an overall "eh." But... I really, really wanted to see this through. Because at one point, I did really love it.
Friends... I am so, SO glad I stuck this one out. Because not only is it my favorite finish of the quarter... it's most definitely in my top three finishes EVER. It's simple and modern and absolutely "my" colors.
My goal for the quarter was to finish the top (the flimsy). Not only did I finish the top, I then quilted it—MYSELF—and bound it. EEK! I'm obscenely proud of these facts. Even though I'm not really sure I should be... overall it's pretty basic quilting here.
I'm still very, very new to quilting with a walking foot and I think I've found the perfect mix of basting, pinning, and quilting that actually works and results in a non-bunchy top. I really wanted to highlight the modern lines of this quilt so I quilted the zig-zags in one direction (using two gradient colorways), and then wider lines in the other direction (and in a gray that matched my background fabric). I then bound it with a cute fabric that i discovered at my local quilt store. I feel that it both blends and pops, and the cirlce print offers a nice contrast. Now if only I could remember the name...
I actually started this with Moda's "make a splash" quilt kit ... but altered it pretty heavily by the time I was done. I'm happy to call this my "Modern Chevron" (although it's not really)... while my husband thinks I should call it "Homage to Draplin" after these posters.
Regardless of what we call it... I'm thrilled. It's not perfect, and I learned many many many lessons along the way... but it was worth it all. It's the first quilt I am keeping for myself and I can't think of a more perfect one to have that honor.
