Six Things on a Saturday

{The Thanksgiving Weekend Edition}

1. The holidays are in full force here... carols playing, scented candles burning, decorations making their way out... (I won't lie, the tree has been up for weeks now.) I've realized though that I need to address the mantle. When we pulled the boxes up, I couldn't for the life of me remember how I arranged it last year. A quick look at my photos revealed that I didn't address it last year. I must have been too busy with work and the boys. So this is the year I'm tackling it. Last year, I addressed the tree issue, finalizing it by buying some garland at 75% off at Michael's. This year, I guess it's time for the mantle. I'd love to have a fully decked house this year...

Now if only the holiday shopping had started...

2. This has been an incredible year for reading for me. I've read so many fabulous novels... my count is well over 40 and about to hit 50. That's incredible for me... especially given the length of some of these suckers. Yesterday, I scored four kindle books that have been on my wish list for months for just dollars a piece. Very excited about that one. I forgot how much I enjoyed reading novels... not non-fiction, not magazines, not kid books... actual literature. (And a solid dose of Young Adult Dystopian Fiction, natch.)

3. This past Tuesday was the boys' field trip for school, for which I was a chaperone. I had my two plus three others, and I was paired with another parent and their group. I honestly have no idea how teachers do this all the time... it.was.exhausting. By the end of the day, I had no voice, my feet hurt from walking, and my head was pounding. I was asleep by 8 PM, and had the luxury of slowly starting the next day as it was a professional day for the facilitators (aka "no school") And it still took me a solid two days to find my groove again! One of my children was less than stellar and has now endangered his spring field trip attendance... but that is a worry for another day.

4. Hayley joined us at Doug's sister's house for Thanksgiving. It's a really good thing that she is cute since she peed on the rug, jumped on to the counter to steal the turkey, and then yakked it up on the rug. Overall though, she is settling in well. We are still trying to get her off of her old schedule (which involved eating and going out at 2am) and onto our schedule. There have been a lot of long nights... and rough mornings here.

5. And on that note, I can't believe that ... yet again ... it's Thanksgiving weekend and I haven't started a single holiday craft. OMG. The stress is beginning to hit... I'll take any and all ideas for teacher gifts now...

6. We took the photos for our holiday card this past week as well too. Oy. It's always been a challenge to get both boys in the photo to look decent. Add a dog to the mix and FORGET it. I got nothing. There's either going to be liberal use of photoshop or a re-shoot for this year. Sigh.

Here's a couple of outtakes for you. See what I mean?!

The fake smile there just.slays.me. Kid has killed hair though!

And on that note... it's back to holiday decorating since I'm pretty sure I hear Hayley rifling through my boxes, finding a "toy" or two...
