The "If" Game

If you are an adoptive parent... you probably already know this game. It's something we all do... especially as we wait for that travel call! Ex: If I get EP this week, my child will most likely be home in X weeks. If my agency continues on this current trend, we will receive travel call X days after the Visa Interview. For those of you that don't know what I'm talking about...

Adoptive parents are given all sorts of vague timelines for the process. We'll receive a referral X months from our HSTK {home study to Korea} date. The child will be between X and X months old. We should expect to travel anywhere from X to X months from ATK {acceptance to Korea}. Not only do the agencies provide these rough guidelines, but they can also be found by scouring forums and boards, and by harassing those in front of you in "line." These constantly shifting, yet somehow tangible, guidelines provide this adoptive mama hours worth of hypotheticals.

So why is this important?!

Because... given the current timelines (which we know could shift in an instant), this is my current "If" game hypothetical:

Our home study is scheduled to go to Korea in June. Referrals with our agency are currently taking 11-12 months. The age of the child at referral is expected to be between 12-14 months. That means our future child will either be born very soon, or may have already been born! How crazy is that?! There's a very good chance our future child is already out in the world somewhere! Now granted, there are several laws that are supposed to be passed this summer on the Korean end of things that could significantly impact our timelines... but for now, I'm busy wondering if there will be another April or May birthday in the family.

{Just to clarify, we are expecting a referral/match May or June of 2013, of a child in the 12-14 month range.}

And since I can't think about birth dates without thinking of signs... I looked up the sign of the Dragon. (Which is a pretty safe bet unless something goes terribly awry with the timelines) Just for fun...

Dragon : A powerful sign, those born under the zodiac sign of the Dragon are energetic and warm-hearted, charismatic, lucky at love and egotistic. They’re natural born leaders, good at giving orders and doing what’s necessary to remain on top. Compatible with Monkey and Rat.

For those of you that have been following along closely, you'll remember that Spencer was born under the sign of the Rat...

Rat : Those born under the zodiac sign of the Rat are quick-witted, clever, charming, sharp and funny. They have excellent taste, are a good friend and are generous and loyal to others considered part of its pack. Motivated by money, can be greedy, is ever curious, seeks knowledge and welcomes challenges. Compatible with Dragon or Monkey.

Hmmmm.... Spencer's horoscope is pretty much dead-on. That should be interesting if it's reflected in a similar manner with our "dragon baby" ... I'm not sure I can handle another energetic kiddo who is good at telling me what to do! {I kid. Kind of.} Kind of fun that, astrologically speaking, the two kiddos are compatible. I wonder if I'll come back and laugh at this post in the future? Who knows!

In the meantime, I plan to entertain myself with hypotheticals.

*I should also point out that this Dragon year is considered a "Black Dragon" year that only comes around once every 60 years. This is viewed as one of the most respected and dignified years to be born under... I don't really know what that means, but I guess it's a good thing?!*
